FAQ

What is FritForming?

FritForming is a system that allows you to shape glass scraps and frit into new, unique glass art. The mold helps you create a basic shape, after which you fuse the work in the kiln.

Can the mold be used in the glass oven?

No. The mold is only intended for forming glass debris and frit before firing. Never place the mold in the kiln.

Which glass is FritForming suitable for?

FritForming can be used with both COE90 and COE96 glass, as long as you never mix them together.

Do I need to use a special firing schedule?

The included firing schedules are guidelines. Because every oven reacts differently, you may need to adjust them slightly to suit your oven.

Can I combine different types of glass scraps and frit?

Yes, as long as they have the same COE. Combining different colors, transparent and opaque glass, often produces surprising results.

How do I clean the mold?

Clean the mold with a dry brush. Don't rinse it in the sink, as glass particles can damage your pipes.

Is FritForming suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. The mold provides a clear basic shape, making it easy for both beginners and experienced glassmakers to work with.

Why work with glass scraps and frit?

It's sustainable, cost-effective, and creatively challenging. Many unique effects are created precisely by reusing residual materials.

Are there any instructions or examples available?

Yes, there are instructional videos available that show you step by step how to work with FritForming.

Will new FritForming molds be added?

Yes, the collection is regularly expanded with new designs and shapes.

Can custom FritForming molds also be ordered?

Yes, custom molds are certainly possible. However, keep in mind that the design, development, and production costs are significantly higher than for the standard collection.

FritForming in 6 steps

1️⃣ Choose your mold and design

Start with a suitable mold and determine your design in advance. Consider color, transparency, texture, and how the final product will be used (decals or a standalone object).

2️⃣ Preparing glass debris and frit

Use scrap glass and frit from previous projects. Sort by color and grain size so you can work in a controlled manner and achieve a beautiful result.

3️⃣ Distribute the frit in the mold

Carefully distribute the frit in the mold. Work layer by layer and, if necessary, use tools such as a frit scoop or tamper to position the glass neatly.

4️⃣ Fix with glass glue

Use a special glass adhesive to lightly secure the frit. Let the adhesive dry thoroughly before removing the piece from the mold.

5️⃣ Release from the mold

Once the glue is dry enough, you can carefully remove the piece from the mold. Use sculpting hooks or a screw to prevent damage.

6️⃣ Firing and finishing

Place the work in the kiln and use a suitable firing program (as a guideline). After the first firing, you can optionally process it in a second firing, for example, for a bowl or collage.

FritForming is all about reuse, creativity, and control—from scrap glass to new glass art.

FritForming – Make art from leftover glass

FritForming is a technique in which glass waste, cutting waste and frit are reused by forming them in specially designed molds.

The technique works with two mold thicknesses:

  • 4 mm → for decals and elements that will later be incorporated into collages, bowls or other glass objects.

  • 7 mm → for freestanding objects such as coasters, flat sculptures and decorative shapes.

This approach combines sustainability with design freedom and makes it possible to reuse residual materials in a targeted and creative manner.
