What do you give someone who is retiring?

That was exactly the question Ewoud and his brothers had.

In Ewoud words:

15-May-2024

Me and my two brothers were looking for a unique gift for my father, who would retire at the end of May 2024.

After some searching on the internet we came across Chris's work and we were immediately captivated by the designs and elaboration.

After a brief exchange of ideas, Chris got to work putting some concepts on paper. The idea was to create a Dutch landscape in which my father and mother can be seen cycling. Something that is expected to happen often during retirement.

The end result exceeded our expectations.

Chris's creative implementation of an idea you have, into glass is a unique combination!

Ewoud sent another message after giving the gift:

June 28, 2024

We gave it as a gift during his farewell party at work. My father is very proud of his glass work of art! It is placed in the window between the garden room and living room. There is a view from both sides!

Very nice to hear that of course!

Creating glassware
What was quite a challenge in this part were all the little pieces that the cyclists make together. This was the first project where I used stringers. Stringers are thin rods of glass that give an extra dimension to glassware. When the work has been melted into one piece, it goes back into the oven to fuse the stringers onto it. This is done at a lower temperature than the first firing. Because the stringers are on top (and not completely melted in), an extra dimension is created in the work.
A video has been made of the making process:
